# Detach the editor into a separate window

Last modified June 1, 2026

2026-06-01

Label: tasks

Approval now supports detaching the editor from the main interface into a separate browser window or tab. This improves multitasking and gives more flexibility when working on documents.

The implementation follows the same behavioural patterns as the existing **Attachment preview** detachment, providing a consistent experience across Approval.

**Key capabilities**
- Detach the editor into a separate browser window.
- Reattach the editor from either the main UI or the detached window.
- Automatic content sync when navigating between tasks (BNXT, Expense, ERP, Calendar).
- Graceful empty state when the current task has no editor.

**How to detach the editor**
1. Open a task that has an available editor.
2. On the right-hand side of the editor panel, click the **Detach editor** icon.
3. The editor opens in a new browser window or tab.

**How to reattach the editor**
- From the main app, click the same icon (now labelled **Reattach editor**) to bring the editor back. The detached window closes automatically.
- From the detached window, close the window using the browser's native controls (the X button, Ctrl+W, or by refreshing). The editor automatically reattaches.

**Navigation between tasks**
With the detached editor open, use the Previous and Next task arrows in the main app. The detached window updates automatically to show the current task's editor content.

**Closing behaviour**
The detached window closes when:
- the user clicks **Reattach editor** from either the main app or the detached window,
- the user navigates away from a task in the main app (for example to My history, Process overview, or Document overview),
- the main Approval browser tab is refreshed,
- all main Approval browser tabs are closed.
